When can I start my child in Augustana’s Sunday School? Augustana offers Christian Education from pre-school through senior high. Typically our littlest students are 4 years old.

Where do the youth gather for Sunday School? Most of the youth begin Sunday mornings at Opening in Christ Chapel. All the Sunday School teachers will meet their students right there at 9:15 a.m. so that parents are free to attend the adult education forums or grab a cup of coffee. This year though we do have a special opening for the PreK-Kindergarten children in Room 13. The teachers for that group of children will be available beginning at 9 a.m., to allow parents to help older children up to Christ Chapel for the 9:15 a.m. opening.

Will the Littlest Angels Choir group still meet? Last year we enjoyed the help of LeEtta Choi with escorting our littlest ones from the 10:30 a.m. worship to their own special choir rehearsals. So that we can share LeEtta with some of our other members, that group will enjoy their music in the Pre-K and Kindergarten Opening in Room 13. Parents will pick up their children at 10:15 a.m.

Why are all students participating in Sunday School openings now? The energy of our kids can be contagious! So we’re going to gather everyone together in the mornings to bounce us right into Sunday School. The thinking here is that we can foster relationships between the all the kids and families, give younger kids some great role models, and give the older groups a ton of opportunities to learn leadership and organization skills. We may tweak things a bit as the year continues, and our kids get more involved in their grade specific projects, but for the first several weeks we’re givin’ this a go!

What ages participate in Confirmation Classes? Middle School students, grades 6th-8th, prepare for confirmation in classes led by our volunteer teachers and Pastor Pederson.

When are middle school students confirmed? Students are confirmed on Reformation Sunday during their 9th grade year. This year that service will fall on October 31.

Is there any Christian Education for senior high students? Yes! Once students have been confirmed, they ‘graduate’ to Augustana’s senior high Breakfast Club. Meeting during the Sunday School hour, senior high students and volunteer teachers, gather over breakfast and discuss current social topics and the application of their faith to the world around them. This year there will be three units of study; "God is not Dr. Phil," Social Statements of the ELCA, and the exploration of a variety of different faiths including some visits to some neighboring churches.

What other activities do the youth participate in? There are a number of ways Augustana engages our youth. While Sunday School and choir are most visible, our youth also participate in a number of social and service oriented activities and events. The annual Christmas Program, the 30-Hour Famine, Middle School Youth Gatherings, and summertime Vacation Church School, Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, and Senior High Ministry trips are all quite popular.

Who is the Children's and Family Minister? Cary Mathis is the new face in the building. He comes to Augustana with tons of energy and some fun fresh ways to get involved with our kids.
