Christian/Muslim Dialogue: Is it worth it and why?

Sundays, 9:15 a.m., Anna Paulson Room

  • February 5 – Why I, as a Lutheran Christian, have gotten involved in interfaith dialogue. Rev. Bonita Bock, Co-Director of Wartburg College West, will speak to the theological and historical reasons for becoming involved in interfaith organizations.
  • February 12 – Monir Ludin, Chairperson for the Abrahamic Initiative and a native of Afghanistan, will address the question. The Abrahamic Initiative is an organization which fosters mutual understanding of the Abrahamic traditions—Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The Abrahamic Initiative received the Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award this year.
  • February 19 – The Multicultural Mosaic Foundation, from the Muslim faith, will be our guests. This is an organization dedicated to cultivating moral and cultural values by promoting understanding, education, dialogue, and peace. They host monthly forums to create dialogue which are open to everyone.

Five Session Bible Study on Numbers
begins February 5

Pastor Bengston will lead this Sunday morning study from February 5 through March 4 on selected passages from the Book of Numbers, the fourth book of the Bible. If you have not read it, you might think it is about a census of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness. However, Numbers has much more material that relates to our faith experience, i.e. the very familiar benediction (The Lord bless you and keep you…), sibling rivalry (Moses and his relationships with sister Miriam and brother Aaron), the bronze serpent (seen today on many ambulances), cities of refuge (like church buildings offering a space in which police do not enter to arrest people – at least they formerly were places of refuge), Moses’ disobedience (which prevented him from entering The Promised Land – any parallel with our hope of heaven?).

Come to the Anna Paulson Room at 9:15 a.m. beginning February 5 as we explore this interesting book.

Tuesday Morning Lenten Series

Beginning Tuesday, February 28, Malise de Bree will lead a six-week Lenten series on meditative prayer. Sanctuary of the Soul, a book recently written by Richard Foster, will be our primary source for discussion. We will also discuss and quietly reflect upon select psalms and writings by some classical Christian spiritual writers. Our hope will be to nurture and deepen our friendship with Jesus. Because this is a small group, class size is limited. Please call Augustana’s office (303-388-4678) to reserve a place and to indicate if you would like for us to order the book for you.

comedy tragedyTheater and Theology
Theater and Theology brings members of Rocky Mountain Synod congregations in and near Denver to productions of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. After viewing the plays, we do talk-back discussions with cast members on theological issues raised in the plays. The plays and these discussions can challenge and stimulate our faith, and, therefore, the mission of the Church, in a unique way. For more information, contact Rosalee Wanchisen (303-759-9836).

Great Wall Story
Tuesday, March 27, 6:30 p.m., Ricketson Theater, Tickets: $30
Registration with check payable to Rocky Mountain Synod and footnoted "T&T Augustana: Great Wall Story" must reach Augustana's office by Tuesday, March 6.

On a slow news day in 1899, three Denver reporters decide to dream up a hoax. Their story: the Great Wall of China is being torn down to open up trade with the West. The reporters go so far as to check fictitious engineers into a local hotel, who purportedly were off to the Far East to secure a contract for the job. The hoax sells newspapers in Denver but threatens to get out of hand when it spreads to Chicago and New York City, where Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World decides to investigate. He sends his copy assistant Harriet Sparrow, originally of Denver, to her hometown to discover the origin of the story. One of the reporters must face losing the trust of his son if the truth comes out. This snappy, stylish period piece based on actual events is truly a home-town story.
