Man hiding his faceJustice: Doing the Right Thing
(Based on Dr. Michael Sandel’s course at Harvard University) Sundays, beginning September 12, 9:30 a.m., Pastor John R. Pederson, presenter

If the world always presented us with clear moral choices, the Bible would be the only guide we might ever need. Life is messier than that, and the Bible offers little guidance for the moral dilemmas we regularly face. This class will be a comparative examination of various normative ethical theories that history has found helpful in making tough choices. The class will be based on one of Harvard’s most subscribed classes over the last 25 years taught by Dr. Michael Sandel. This is the introductive college class in ethics you always meant to take.

  • Utilitarianism
  • Libertarianism
  • Immanuel Kant
  • John Rawls
  • Affirmative Action
  • Dilemmas of Loyalty
  • Justice and the Common Good

Bible Study on Ephesians
Sunday, September 12, 9:30 a.m., September 19, and 26, 9:15 a.m.
Pastor John Bengston will be leading a three-session Bible Study to begin the fall as one of the Adult Education offerings. The focus will be on the book of Ephesians. The brief letter of Paul is concerned with God’s plan “to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth” (1:10). Paul compresses the message of the faith into this short letter in which he gives an overall view of the grand scheme of the gospel. (Copied from the introduction to Ephesians, Study Bible: the New Student Bible (NRSV), published by Augsburg Fortress, Minneapolis.)

If this sounds like something which you might be interested in pursuing, please contact Malise de Bree (303-388-4678 ext. 122 or debree@augustanadenver.org).

Faith In :30 (F.I.T.)
The Faith In :30 (F.I.T.) Sunday morning class is developed specifically for parents with children in Sunday School and other young families, although everyone is welcome. The goal is to provide participants with a relevant, meaningful, and interesting opportunity to further their personal relationship with God, especially within the context of life and family issues. The class uses a variety of speakers, topics, and leaders which lead to lively and insightful discussions. Join us each Sunday at 9:30 a.m. immediately following the Sunday School opening in Room 1 for coffee and discussion. The first session will kick off Sunday, September 19—the week after the children’s Sunday School begins.

Questions? Contact Janet Flesch (jkflesch@comcast.net) or Ken Beazer (mercutiok@comcast.net).
