Holy Baptism
It all begins at Holy Baptism, and Augustana supports families of the newly baptized. Families of newly baptized infants and toddlers are enrolled in our Splash program, with monthly mailings that nurture the whole family. Because ministry begins with baptism, the Augustana Foundation also gives an investment gift in the Mission Loan Fund in the child's name.

Lenten Communion Class
During Lent, Augustana offers a class for children in grades 3-5 and their familaies in preparation for the children's First Communion. The class celebrates their First Communion on Maundy Thursday. For more information, contact Cary Mathis, Children's and Family Minister (mathis@augustanadenver.org).

Nursery Care
Complimentary nursery care is available for children during all Sunday morning activities. Starting at 8 a.m., care is provided during worship, during education hour for those too young for Sunday School, and also during 10:30 a.m. worship. The nursery is also staffed for congregational meetings and special worship events such as Thanksgiving Eve and Lenten services.

Safe, interesting learning
Our incredible Sunday School program has dedicated teachers (aka “Shepherds”), exciting classrooms, and solid curriculum. Our object is to provide quality Christian education in a safe, caring environment. We utilize safe practices in all our classrooms, which include training, background checks, and the two-by-two model of two teachers per class. The Sunday School children and youth will have the opportunity to learn, play, grow in their faith, and be themselves in a safe environment. Boring Sunday School is out, and fresh, high energy, exceptional learning is central to what makes Augustana’s education program effective!

Children Kindergarten through 5th grade start with an opening in Christ Chapel at 9:15 a.m. every week. Here they celebrate birthdays, meet teachers, and sing lively songs of faith.

Early elementary classes, preschool through 2nd grade, work through a rotation of art, movie, and story areas. There they create art (tactile/kinesthic), see videos (visual), hear scripture (auditory) lessons on a rotation using the same Bible story for optimal learning benefit. After three weeks, another piece of scripture is introduced and the rotation restarts. Augustana uses Augsburg Fortress curriculum, the publishing house of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, which offers solid, Lutheran theological principles.

Third through 5th grades use lectionary- based curriculum studying the same scripture readings in the classroom that are read and preached in worship that day. Once again, this provides for optimal learning of scripture.

See the youth page for information on Sunday morning classes for middle school and senior high youth.

Lenten Communion Class
Lenten Communion Classes are offered each year during Lent for fifth grade students and other students that their families feel are ready for communion. During two weekly meetings, students will study the sacrament of communion, its meaning and symbolism. They receive their first communion on Maundy Thursday.
