500 Years on the Move for Hunger
In honor of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and Martin Luther’s commitment to daily bread for all people, the Rocky Mountain Synod’s Hunger Network is encouraging all of our congregations to “Move for Hunger” while raising money for ELCA World Hunger. Augustana’s goal is $15,170 over 150 days—Pentecost Sunday, June 4, to Reformation Sunday, October 29.
How to participate
Individuals or Teams “On the Move” are encouraged to “Move” physically by walking, biking, running, etc., or to “Move” spiritually by spending time volunteering for hunger organizations, praying for others, meditating, etc. (15 minutes = 1 mile). Participating individuals or teams will keep track of their “miles” and donate and/or raise monies, based on their miles, toward the ELCA World Hunger program. Please make money gifts payable to Augustana Lutheran Church, designated for ELCA World Hunger, so we can tally the congregation’s totals!
Register to be “On the Move” as an individual or on a team. Teams are a fun way to support each other or meet new people. Email Julie (firstname.lastname@example.org) (subject line: 500 Years) to be part of a team if you don’t know who to ask. Also email Julie to let her know you’re registering as an individual or as a team. Include teammates and team name.
Count and log your miles
Log books are ready for tracking your miles and money raised for ELCA World Hunger. Log books are available on Augustana’s entrance tables or download one here. Log your weekly miles and money online here. Volunteer hours for a hunger organization, prayer time, number of steps and other kinds of exercise can all be converted into miles (15 minutes equals 1 mile). Some people are even converting rounds of golf to miles and money. Be creative! The idea is to increase movement and raise a congregational total of $15,170 for ELCA World Hunger over 150 days: June 4–October 29, Pentecost to Reformation Day.
Pick up a water bottle
Reusable “On the Move” Water Bottles are located in boxes at each sanctuary entrance. Hydrate AND commemorate Augustana’s plan to celebrate the 500 year anniversary of the Reformation!
Flat Luther goes where Augustana people are on the move. Take him home, color him, and take pictures with him as you’re “On the Move” to post on Facebook or email to Lyn Goodrum for publications (email@example.com). Flat Luther cut-outs are available on Augustana’s entrance tables, or download one here.
See how far our congregation has gone
Map the Moves for Hunger outside the organ-side door of the sanctuary hangs a world map by the elevator. The first leg of the journey will show the congregation’s total miles week-to-week reflected from Wittenberg, Germany (Martin Luther, 1517) to Denver, Colorado, USA (Augustana, 2017). First leg: 5,000 miles from Wittenberg 1517 to Denver 2017!
